Lucio Fontana
Lucio Fontana was born in 1899 in Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentina. After studying at the Brera Academy in Milan, he returned to Argentina, where he began his first sculptures. In 1928 he went back to Italy, co-founding the group Astrattisti Italiani in 1930 and holding his first solo exhibition.
During World War II, Fontana sought refuge in Buenos Aires. After the war, he reached his artistic peak by piercing, slashing, and cutting canvases to transcend the physical limits of traditional painting. In 1946 he wrote the Manifesto Blanco, anticipating experimental and dynamic art, followed by the Manifesto Spaziale in 1947. Later, he explored neon and spatial installations, always seeking to expand art beyond material boundaries.
Fontana passed away in 1968 in Varese, Italy.
